What are the Different Types of Burns?

Knowing the different types of burns and when medical intervention is necessary is important for preventing infections, skin damage, or scarring. The major classifications of burns are:

• First-degree burns- This is the lowest classification and most common among household burns. Sunburns, hot water, small flames, and some caustic chemicals can cause reddened skin, slight pain, and minor damage to the skin that will likely heal with first aid treatment at home.
• Second-degree burns- When your skin is in prolonged contact with chemicals, fire, or hot water you can get this more severe type of burn. It can cause blisters, pain, and more severe damage to the skin.
• Third-degree burns- The most serious type of burn can result in charring, skin damage, and possibly nerve damage. This type of burn extends to the fat layer beneath the skin, which will start to appear leathery, stiff, tan, or waxy white. A skin graft is usually necessary to properly treat third-degree burns. If you’ve experienced this type of burn, call 911 immediately or go to the nearest emergency room.

More severe burns occur when both layers of the skin are penetrated. This requires immediate emergency treatment. If you or someone you know experiences either, call 911 immediately.

When to Seek Help at an Urgent Care

Most smaller burns can be treated at home with first aid. To properly treat a second-degree burn and the corresponding pain, you should seek treatment at our urgent care center. Here we can help you manage the pain and treat the burn properly to avoid an infection.

When Should You Go to an Emergency Room?

If you suspect you have a third-degree burn or beyond, you should call 911 immediately or go to the nearest emergency room.

What To Bring When You Visit

To treat you most effectively, please be prepared to tell us about any medications you take (including vitamins and supplements), past illnesses and surgeries, and your primary care doctor’s phone number and address so we can transfer records, if necessary.

Yes. We accept Medicare and most major insurance carriers. If you don’t have insurance or prefer to pay out-of-pocket, our services are reasonably priced and less expensive than an ER visit.
