For adults, the normal average body temperature ranges from 97.5 to 97.7 degrees Fahrenheit (F). The CDC considers a fever to be a temperature of 100.4 degrees F or greater with skin warm to the touch. A fever is usually a symptom of an underlying cause like an illness.

In adults, a fever above 103 degrees F can be concerning. If you are an adult with a fever that lasts longer than three days, visit Bayside Urgent Care Center for evaluation.

In many cases, a fever is your body’s way of fighting off an invader. Certain viruses and bacteria cannot live in hot environments, so when your body heats up, these microorganisms are killed. A fever is one of your body’s defenses and is part of your immune system response.

Typically, fevers are a symptom of an underlying cause and are usually the first sign of a problem, such as the following:

Note that if your fever is accompanied by throat swelling, confusion, or difficulty breathing, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room.

Also, remember that infants have difficulty regulating their body temperature, and you shouldn’t wait to seek help if they have a temperature above 100.4 degrees F. For babies and toddlers up to 2 years, seek help for temperatures above 102 degrees F.

To diagnose your fever and plan the right treatment, we perform a routine physical, check your vital signs, and get information about the symptoms you are experiencing. We may perform bloodwork to find out if you have an infection.

Most commonly, the treatment for a fever is an over-the-counter or prescription medication. If you have a bacterial infection, you may be prescribed an antibiotic. Some other at-home treatments include rest and fluids.
