Strep Throat

Strep throat is a contagious bacterial infection that affects the throat and tonsils. The bacteria also cause your throat to be sore and scratchy. This illness accounts for only a small percentage of sore throats. However, it can cause serious complications if left untreated.

Strep throat is contagious through airborne droplets, contaminated surfaces, and shared food. Typically occurring between late fall and early spring, it is most common in school-aged children and teens.

Most sore throats (also known as pharyngitis) are caused by viruses like the common cold or flu. In these instances, sore throats usually improve on their own.

Sore throats can also be caused by a streptococcus bacterial infection. The resulting strep throat can be treated with antibiotics to prevent complications.

Strep throat tends to come on quickly and can cause some or all of the following symptoms:

If your sore throat has lasted longer than a few days, visit Bayside Urgent Care Center for a rapid strep test or throat culture.

One of Bayside’s medical professionals will perform the rapid strep test by swabbing the back of your throat. The swab is then tested to see if the streptococcus bacteria is present. Because we use a rapid test, the results will be available while you wait.

If we diagnose strep throat, we will prescribe an antibiotic regimen to help your body rid itself of the bacteria. It’s important to finish your prescription, even if you start feeling better. After you’ve been medicated for 24 hours and no longer have a fever, you can return to work or school.
