Should You Go to Urgent Care for Cold?
Common colds come with symptoms like sneezing and sniffling. While they may be confused with influenza, colds do not last as long. Left untreated, colds can turn into something more severe like a sinus infection, bronchitis, or pneumonia.
If you are unsure if your symptoms are cold, flu, or something more serious, visit Bayside Urgent Care. Our medical staff is expert at treating this and other non-life-threatening emergencies.
We are located in Clearwater, Florida, and we're always accepting new patients. No appointments are necessary.
What Causes Colds?
A common cold is a viral infection of your upper respiratory tract (nose and throat). The virus (most commonly rhinoviruses) spreads when someone who is infected coughs, sneezes, or talks. The virus then enters your body through your nose, mouth, or eyes. It can also spread by sharing contaminated items with someone who is sick.
Adults can expect to get two to three colds each year, although children under six years are at the highest risk of getting a cold.
How Can I Prevent Catching a Cold?
Even though the common cold is easy to catch, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk of exposure:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Stay away from people who are sick.
What are the Symptoms of a Cold?
Typically, symptoms appear within one to three days of exposure to the virus and may include:
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Sore throat
- Headache or body aches
- Low-grade fever (97 to 99 degrees Fahrenheit [F])
When Should I Visit Urgent Care?
If you experience severe cold symptoms that last longer than a few days, visit Bayside Urgent Care. Adults should also seek medical attention if you have:
- Fever higher than 101.3 F
- Shortness of breath
- Severe sore throat, headache, or sinus pain
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), most people will recover from the common cold within about seven to ten days. However, people with weakened immune systems may take longer to heal and are at higher risk for developing more serious illnesses like pneumonia.
How Do You Treat a Cold?
A simple cold is best treated at home using the usual remedies that may include:
- Drinking plenty of liquids to stay hydrated
- Gargling with salt water
- Getting plenty of rest
- Taking cold medicines like decongestants or antihistamines as necessary
