Urgent Care for Abrasions
Your skin is your body’s first line of defense, keeping you safe from infection. Small cuts, scrapes, scratches, and abrasions — while not uncommon — break this defense. So, how do you know when a wound needs medical attention, and how should you treat it? If you are dealing with an abrasion (or any wound) that concerns you, visit Bayside Urgent Care Center for evaluation. We are located in Clearwater, Florida, and we’re always accepting new patients. No appointments are necessary.
What is An Abrasion?
An abrasion is a type of wound that occurs when the skin rubs up against a rough surface. Other words used to describe the injury are graze, scrape, or scuff. An abrasion caused by the skin rubbing against the hard ground may be called a road rash. Abrasions are common injuries, especially among children.
At-Home Treatment of Abrasions
Most abrasions can be easily treated at home with supplies from your first aid kit. Remove any jewelry before gently cleaning the area with lukewarm water and mild soap. If the wound is bleeding, cover it with a clean cloth or bandage. If it is not bleeding, you can leave the wound uncovered. You can also use a topical antibiotic ointment to help prevent any infection.
When Should You Seek Urgent Care?
While some abrasions don’t require treatment from a medical professional, here are some of the things you should look out for that indicate you should seek your nearest urgent care center:
You should also consider seeing a doctor if it’s been more than five years since you received a tetanus shot.

When Should I Go to an Emergency Room?

Emergency room visits should be used for life-threatening emergencies. If you experience one or more of the following, call 911 or go to the ER:
What To Bring When You Visit
