Ranging from mild to severe, headaches can be a nuisance or an indicator of a more serious problem. Typically, headaches are caused by not getting enough sleep, from the food you eat, stress, among other reasons.
If you have a severe headache that lasts for more than a few hours, visit Bayside Urgent Care Center to find out the cause and get relief.
We are located in Clearwater, Florida, and we’re always accepting new patients. No appointments are necessary.
What Causes Headaches?
Several things can bring on headaches. Most headaches are related to:
- Infections
- Stress
- Dehydration
- Smoking
- Alcohol
- Caffeine withdrawal
- Some foods
- Hunger
- Lack of sleep
- Allergies
- Some medications
- Vision problems
- Head injuries
Why Do Headaches Occur?
Headaches are common in people of all ages. Usually, the nerves, blood vessels, and muscles covering your head and neck are where most headaches occur. When the muscles and blood vessels constrict (narrow), they put pressure on the nerves, which send a pain signal to your brain, and you feel the headache.
Are There Different Types of Headaches?
There are several different types of headaches that you may experience. The common types are:
- Sinus headaches: You will feel this type of headache in the sinus area behind your eyes and nose. You may also feel a throbbing sensation in your cheeks or experience ear pain. Usually, sinus headaches occur when you have a cold or if you suffer from allergies.
- Tension headaches: These typically occur across your head or neck and are generally caused by stress or muscle tightness.
- Migraines: These generally occur on one side of your head and are accompanied by more severe pain. When experiencing a migraine, you may be sensitive to light or sound.
- Cluster headaches: This is the most painful type of headache and could cause you to experience intense pain around one eye.
To determine the cause of your headache, your healthcare provider will ask you to describe what kind of headache you are experiencing so that they can treat it appropriately.
When Should You Visit Urgent Care vs. the Emergency Room
Most times, headaches are not a sign of a bigger problem. Given time, most will go away with rest, sleep, hydration, or over-the-counter medication like acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
If your headaches are more intense, don’t go away, or happen more frequently, an urgent care center like Bayside can perform an evaluation and offer treatments based on our findings.
Note that if neurological symptoms like vision loss accompany your headache, blurred or double vision, or weakness, visit your nearest emergency room.
